Arguably the most anticipated Christmas ad from around the globe – UK retailer John Lewis’ – has landed and, as we’ve come to expect, it’s once again full of surprises.
The ad plays out as a homage to Elton John as we see his life’s highlights in reverse, way back to when he gets his first piano for Christmas as a young boy.
However, as you’ll read below, not everyone’s a fan of the spot, with some complaining the ad simply isn’t Christmassy enough.
Set to John’s classic Your Song, the two-minute spot is the brainchild of John Lewis’ incumbent creative agency Adam&Eve/DDB.
Apart from John’s own cameo, five other actors play the singer throughout the ad. It has been reported that John received a staggering £5 million ($A8.8 million) to appear, a figure both he and John Lewis have refuted.
Coincidentally, the ad arrives the same week in the UK that tickets for John’s global farewell tour.

But as it likes to do, the ad has divided UK viewers. Some believing it was a lovely, sentimental piece of advertising, while others complained it lacked the usual turkey and baubles of most festive spots.
