Fairfax Gives Another 30 Journos The Heave-Ho

Fairfax Media has made yet another round of job cuts across its newspaper businesses, with up to 30 journalists believed to have been pushed into redundancy yesterday.

After a round of voluntary redundancies failed to stack up enough job cuts, the 30 journos, believed to hail from The Age, The Financial Review and The Sydney Morning Herald, were subsequently given their marching orders.

It comes after reports yesterday suggested Fairfax may soon stop printing its weekday editions, with CEO, Greg Hywood, said the business was looking to print less newspapers and focus more on a 24/7 digital focus.

Although not specific in detail, many believed that the end of The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald weekday print editions could come as early as 2017.

Fairfax axed around 120 fulltime staff from its Sydney and Melbourne newsrooms in March, with this number later dropped to 100 editorial staff. The cuts caused strikes of quite epic proportions, with many members of the media industry rallying beside their peers.

Still, these cuts weren’t enough and after a lower number of voluntary redundancies in its latest round, the company switched to forced redundancies.

One of the more high profile journo cuts was revealed by The Australian’s Media Diary Column as controversial columnist Paul Sheehan, who was “stood down” indefinitely after writing an unsubstantiated story about an alleged gang rape back in March.
