Facebook And Instagram Put The Spotlight On Regional Australia As Part Of Mardi Gras Campaign

To celebrate the 2020 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Instagram and Facebook are bringing together inspirational LGBTQ+ communities from around the country, putting them at the of this year’s campaign titled “Your Voice Matters”.

Whilst the Mardi Gras parade itself is based in Sydney, Facebook has the unique ability to bring together the LGBTQ+ community, by empowering queer expression and allowing people to create strong connections with likeminded people no matter where they’re located. From Launceston to Darwin and everywhere in between, Australians are encouraged to join in the celebrations and connect in safe and supportive ways, gaining a front row seat to this parade when following #MardiGras2020 as well as their favourite creators.

This year, Facebook will paint the town rainbow and celebrate with Instagram creators and Facebook Group community members from across Australia. Adding a touch of sparkle to the “Your Voice Matters” float are teen trans creator and LGBTQ+ advocate @ajclementine_; queer crochet artist @chiliphilly and teen creator and dragqueen @alrighthey amongst others.

Black Rainbow founder Dameyon Bonson said: “Facebook and Instagram have helped amplify voices and spotlight groups that would not normally have had this exposure through traditional methods. Black Rainbow’s growth is almost solely attributed to social media with Facebook playing a large role in this growth. Our success to date certainly didn’t happen overnight, but we managed to make it work over time. It’s also been so wonderful to see how Facebook has helped spotlight other Indigenous LGBTIQ+SB groups and individuals and create connections.”

Spotlighted LGBTQ+ Facebook groups include:

  • Black Rainbow – Australia’s leading indigenous suicide prevention and mental health support source for LGBTQ+ people.
  • LGBTQA Elders Australia – the group brings together, supports and promotes the interests and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ Elders across Australia who are approaching or have reached the age of 55 years and over.
  • Trikone – The Page and private Group offer a supportive, empowering and non-judgmental environment, where gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender South Asians can meet, make connections, bond together and proudly promote awareness and acceptance of their sexuality in society.

From popping rainbow hashtags, exploding ‘Happy Mardi Gras’ animations and light up Stories rings, you’ll be in full Mardi Gras spirit when creating and sharing in the celebrations via the platforms. The Instagram and Facebook co-branded campaign also encompasses wellbeing materials for those in the LGBTQ+ community. These products and tools are designed to be used by Australians, to help express themselves and encourage the spirit of Mardi Gras.

In the lead up to the parade, Instagram and Facebook have identified the trends that have shone the brightest across each platform, providing insights into how LGBTQ+ communities engage across Australia.

The top Facebook LGBTQ+ groups include:

  • Queer Housing Melbourne!
  • Queer Housing Sydney
  • Melbourne Gay Pals – LGBTQI+
