The former footballer gave control of his social media account, which numbers hundreds of millions of followers, to a doctor from Ukraine, in an effort to raise awareness about how medical professionals are dealing with the Russian invasion in the country.

David Beckham handed over his Instagram account to a doctor from Ukraine last Sunday, as she used it to explain the work being done in the country by medics during the ongoing war with Russia.

Dr Iryna, who is in the city of Kharkiv, showed Beckham’s followers footage of how newborns are being treated in the underground facilities where thousands of people have fled to in order to avoid all the shelling from their invaders.

The doctor, who herself works as a paediatric anaesthesiologist, explained that since the start of the war she had not gotten much of a rest, as she had been treating patients during all hours of the day.

“The first days were the most difficult. We had to learn how to work with bombings and strikes. We are probably risking our lives but we don’t think about it at all. We love our work. Doctors and nurses here, we worry, we cry but none of us will give up,” Dr Iryna explained.

She went on to describe how during the first days of the invasion in Kharkiv, which is Ukraine’s second largest city, most of the pregnant women at the regional perinatal centre, which she’s in charge of, were forced to move to the basement for their own safety, with some newborn babies remaining above ground and near the line of fire as they were tied to the equipment that kept them to life.

David Beckham asked his followers to consider donating to Unicef, a humanitarian fund by the United Nations for which he is an ambassador.
