Creative and media agency CHE Proximity has appointed its Sydney managing director, David Halter, to the national role of chief strategy officer (CSO).

Halter has been running CHEP’s Sydney office since it opened in 2016, and will still retain this responsibility working in his new role, which will see him run a planning department of over 60 people across the agency’s Sydney and Melbourne locations.

CHEP’s appointment of Halter as CSO is designed to connect the six disciplines that sit within the planning group: brand, data, experience, technology, media and influence.

Chris Howatson, chief executive of CHEP, said: “CSO is a role that has traditionally been purposefully left out of the CHEP narrative – that is, it takes a diversity of thinkers, not a single power broker, to shape the work we do for our clients.

“To me, Dave is the one global exception to this philosophy. He is able to seamlessly move across disciplines, problems and categories to orchestrate a transformational narrative that changes clients’ businesses, get to great ideas, and establishes a pipeline of work for the entire agency to create.”

Halter said he was looking forward to the new challenge.

“We are very lucky at CHEP to have such diverse planning capabilities to help lead our client’s strategic agenda,” he said.

“We compete daily against creative agencies, media agencies, specialist agencies and consultancies, so we need to be on our game.

“My role will be less about telling our planners how to be better planners, but instead conducting and connecting opportunities across disciplines to ensure we have the best possible product.”
