While they may be reliable in getting us to and from work every day, cars ranked number one in the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s list of MOST product recalls in FY16.

According to the consumer watchdog, there were a total of 670 product recalls last financial year – up 12.4 per cent from FY15 – with cars accounting for 182 of them (up 7.7 per cent).

The product category with the next highest amount of recalls was food and groceries with 123 (up 73.2 per cent), followed by electrical and gas with 80 (down 23.1 per cent), recreation with 79 (up 79.5 per cent), kids with 75 (down 3.8 per cent), home and garden with 66 (up 13.8 per cent), IT and phones with 11 (up 22.2 per cent), while clothing (up 100 per cent) and industrial (down 57.1 per cent) had six each.

Four product recalls were issued for the health and beauty category last financial year, down 63.6 per cent from the previous 12 months, while only three agricultural products were recalled (unchanged from FY 15).

The ACCC has also launched a new website – Product Safety Australia – which lists product recalls and provides information on product safety standards for consumers and retailers.
