Condom Brands Creates One Of A Kind Athletic Suit

Just in time for Rio 2016, condom brand Skyn has created a one-of-a-kind conceptual long jump suit made out of condom material.

In a press release, a Skyn representative said the company was “inspired by athletes who are constantly in search of innovative ways to gain a competitive edge, we turned to the world of athletics. The result was an experiment in performance apparel – a one-of-a-kind conceptual long jump suit: SKYNFEEL™ APPAREL.”

The garment features wing-inspired flaps along the edge of the body, which stay flat during the run and open up during the jump, as the athlete twists his arms and straightens his legs. This aerodynamic design creates an upward lift for a fraction more airtime.

The male model is professional Dutch long jumper Joren Tromp.

David Chaker, senior global brand director at Skyn Condoms said: “We knew our Skynfeel condom material was revolutionary in our own industry, but we were curious about what else it could do. So we looked to the world of performance athletics and decided to conduct an experiment in apparel. We wanted to allow ourselves to think differently, outside of our own condom box.”

The fashion designer Pauline van Dongen chatted with Forbes to discuss how the piece was constructed. “The creative process behind the development of the suit has been a great as well as challenging experience. The Skynfeel material – polyisoprene – can be used and treated in so many different ways. Since it comes as a liquid we had many options [as to] how to process it. It took quite some experimentation to develop an approach that suited our concept.

“We tried many techniques and were constantly refining our skills throughout the process. We also did a lot of experiments placing the material with its flaps on the body, to see how it behaved in motion and if, from the perspective of aerodynamics, the flaps would open in the right direction. I like studying the behavior of materials and pushing their limits.”
