Seven’s drama Revenge packed a punch on its return last night with 1.498 million viewers, but despite weeks of heavy promotion the result was a far cry from its premiere last year.

The long-waited for second season of Revenge, which started in the US at the end of September, took second place in the key demographics and overall, but was down on last year’s two million plus premiere.

Revenge sat behind Seven’s My Kitchen Rules which had a blockbuster result with 2.228 million viewers, according to OzTam’s preliminary overnight ratings.

The outcome is the best yet for My Kitchen Rules, which is now in its second week, and blew competitor MasterChef: The Professionals into the deep fryer.

MasterChef won only 627,000 viewers for Ten and was pushed down to the 19th spot – just ahead of the ABC’s Q&A which had an audience of 607,000 viewers.

MasterChef did however make it into the top 10 in both the 16-39 and 18-49 demographic where it claimed 245,000 and 355,000 viewers respectively.

MKR dominated both key demos.

The premiere of Nine’s The Block: All Stars was a quiet affair with less than one million people tuning in.

The program sat in ninth place with 959,000 viewers, just ahead of A Current Affair which had an audience of 950,000.

Nine’s sitcom import The Big Bang Theory performed better than the heavily promoted renovation show, in sixth place the comedy pulled in 1.064 million viewers.

The Block did claim a spot in the top 10 in both the 16-39 and 18-49 demos where it was watched by 293,000 and 479,000 respectively.

Seven ruled the ratings last night with a total 37% share, including its digital channels, and was more than 10 percentage points ahead of its nearest competitor Nine on 25.7%.

Seven’s main channel took 30.4% alone while Nine’s main channel took 18.8%.

Ten’s overall share was 15.1% while its main channel took 9.9% share of viewers.

ABC had an overall share of 18.6% as SBS took 3.6%.
