Vale Internet Explorer: Microsoft Retires Iconic Browser After 25 Years

Los Angeles, California USA - February 11, 2018. Buildings at Microsoft Square in downtown Los Angeles USA. It is part of L.A. Live complex and Microsoft theater offer live concert and award venue. Many famous restaurants are located in this square.

Microsoft has called time on its web browser offering Internet Explorer after more than 25 years.

With Google’s Chrome and Apple’s Safari currently commanding so much of the global browser market share, the popularity of Internet Explorer has waned over the years.

To compete with these dominant browsers, Microsoft has been investing in Edge – its updated browser offering which launched in 2015.

Unfortunately for Internet Explorer and its users, this has meant the end of the road.

“We are announcing that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications,” Microsoft said in a statement.

Microsoft confirmed Internet Explorer will officially be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, meaning there is time to continue using the browser if you so well please.

While Internet Explorer has failed to make an impact as a legitimate browser in recent years, it has still managed to gain a certain level of notoriety among web users and meme aficionados.

As a result, it was no surprise to see how Twitter reacted to the news of Internet Explorer’s demise.
