Date Set For Cricket Australia And Seven West Media Legal Showdown

Seven West Media and Cricket Australia will be heading to the Federal Court in March of next year, as the TV broadcaster continues its legal fight against the sporting body.

As reported in The Australian, Justice Paul Anastassiou yesterday set March 15 as the date for pre discovery.

If successful, Seven’s legal challenge could result in damages or the termination of Seven’s existing deal with Cricket Australia, which is said to be worth around $450 million.

Last week it was reported that Seven head of sport claimed the broadcaster could sue Cricket Australia for “many millions of dollars”, as a result of the sporting body changing the schedule this summer.

Seven has previously filed papers in court seeking access to emails between the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Foxtel and state governments.

Seven claimed that Cricket Australia had given Foxtel exclusivity to games contra to the agreement.

The broadcaster is also said to be aggrieved that Cricket Australia changed the Indian’s touring schedule which was supposed to start with a five Test series to which Seven and Foxtel would share the rights.

The updated schedule pushed the Brisbane Test at the Gabba back to January 15, where the broadcaster argues, many Australians have already returned back to work.
