Rugby Australia Opens Bidding With New “Whole Of Rugby Package”, As Broadcast Rights Still In The Air

Rugby Australia has opened bidding for its next broadcast media rights cycle with a new “whole of rugby” package.

The code will offer a package including content and competitions from across every level of the game from club rugby to the Wallabies and Wallaroos.

The new offering will be in addition to the SANZAAR package, which includes Super Rugby and The Rugby Championship.

In a statement, RA CEO Raelene Castle said the strategy will have a “significantly better outcome” for fans, adding there is already “real interest” in the new package.

“We have created alignment across our competitions which has enabled us to go to market with a rights package encompassing all levels of the game, with the aim of expanding the reach of our competitions and growing the audiences for the sport across each level of the game.

“Importantly, our initial conversations in the broadcast market have confirmed that there is real interest in a ‘whole of rugby’ package of content.”

It’s been rumoured Fox Sports will walk away from rugby union following a 25-year broadcasting partnership after Fox Sports and RA failed to come to an agreement.

Fox Sports and 10 are the domestic broadcasters, with Fox showing all Super Rugby games and both screening Wallabies Test matches.

Industry sources suggest RA will sign a deal with Ten and Optus, who would show Super Rugby on subscription.

However, Castle is confident Fox Sports will still bid for the rights when the market process to negotiate begins shortly.
