Disney Pulls Content From Stan And Foxtel Ahead Of Disney+ Launch

Paris, France - November 29, 2014: Disney Store in Paris, on the famous Champs Elysees boulevard. It is the international chain of specialty stores selling only Disney related items, many of them exclusive.

Disney has removed content from nine-owned streaming service Stan and PayTV provider Foxtel in preparation for the launch of Disney+ in Australia.

The move, which had been rumoured for some time, comes less than a year after Disney and Stan signed a content deal for Australia.

Disney+ launches in Australia on Tuesday.

Foxtel removed the dedicated Disney Movies channel earlier this month, although the PayTV provider has extended the deals for its Disney and Disney Jnr channels.

Foxtel will also hold onto (Disney-owned) 20th Century Fox titles such as The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad and Bob’s Burgers.

Stan meanwhile has removed the Disney tile that appeared on the homepage and movies like Toy StoryFinding NemoFrozen and Cars.

However, there are still two seasons of Lizzie McGuire on Stan, which originally appeared on the Disney Channel, despite the fact Disney+ is launching a reboot of the series.

While Nine Entertainment CEO Hugh Marks has previously indicated his desire to partner with Disney for the service, he told shareholders last week Disney is launching the service with “clean air, as they should”, and that there would be no deal anytime soon.

“Disney+ is a bit of a different product,” he said, on a possible partnership with Disney.

“Very family-focused … Stan certainly we tend to be broad appeal, families, men, women, older people, younger people, Stan has a range of content that appeals to different audiences so it’s a bit of a different proposition”.

After launching in the US last week, Disney reported over 10 million people signed up for the streaming service on the first day of operation.
