Uber Partners With Charity (RED) For World AIDS Day

For World AIDS Day, Uber in the US is partnering with global charity (RED) to raise funds to accelerate the end of HIV/AIDS. The ride-sharing app will encourage passengers to add an extra $5 on top of their normal fare, all donations will be given directly to (RED).

The charity (RED) has set its sights on eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV globally by 2020. In the States, Uber riders in more than 150 cities can participate in this campaign by contributing $5 on top of their UberX fare — $0.25 of which will be used to pay for processing fees.

When the passenger chooses the uberRED option they will be prompted via SMS at the end of the trip to donate $5 to the Global Fund.

Around the world, cars in the app will turn red to drive awareness around the cause. Also the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the largest private foundation in the world, has pledged to match all donations made to (RED) in the Uber app.

The charity (RED) was founded in 2006 by U2’s Bono and activist attorney Bobby Shriver as a way to make it easier for individuals and corporations to join in the fight against AIDS and other related viruses-including tuberculosis and malaria. Over the past decade, (RED) has raised more than US$320 million, the charity is famous for pairing with brands such as Starbucks, Converse, Apple, Nike, Belvedere vodka and Coca-Cola.
