Apple has set up a Twitter account to facilitate customer service, reveal tutorials and tips about Apple products and decrease the number of people swamping Apple Genius bar.

In comparison to other big technology companies, Apple has a minimal social media presence. The overall Apple brand does not have a Twitter page, it has opened accounts for iTunes and Apple Musics. In 2014 Apple created a Tumblr page to promote the iPhone 5c (but that has now been deleted), the company also has Facebook and Tumblr accounts for iTunes and Apple Music.

The account @AppleSupport received over 24,000 followers within two hours, the page also replied to over 184 tweets to people asking questions. The common reply was recommending customer contacts them via direct messaging- a feature which was announced two weeks ago by Twitter.

Jenny Goodridge, Head of Business Development – Australia & NZsaid in a blog post: “Customer service conversations often start in Tweets, but then need to transition to a private channel when personal information is required. We’re making that transition as easy as a single click. A business can now add a deep link to their Tweets that automatically displays a call to action button, which allows the customer to send the business a Direct Message, quickly and easily.”

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has just over two million, during the Super Bowl Cook tweeted a blurry photo which was mercilessly teased on social media.

Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey was quick to welcome Apple Support to the platform:
