Wednesday TV Wrap: Socceroos & Channel Nine Enjoy Tasty Wins

The Socceroos are off to the World Cup next year after beating Honduras last night in Sydney 3-1. And it was good news for broadcaster Channel Nine, who pulled 1.16 million viewers in just four cities,

Arguably, Australia’s win was even better news for SBS, who have the hosting rights to the World Cup in Russia next year.

On the back of the soccer, Nine easily won the night with 34.9 per cent audience share. Seven was second with 25.8 per cent, the ABC beat Ten (18.7 vs 13.7 per cent respectively), while the SBS could muster only seven per cent.

With the Socceroos taking a chunk of eyeballs, most shows were down last night.

The soccer aside, Nine’s 6pm news pulled 892,00 and A Current Affair had 600,000 in four cities.

Seven’s night was led by its news bulletin with 955,000. Home and Away (626,000), The Chase (556,000), Instant Hotel (525,000), The Secret Daughter (492,000) and Jessica Mauboy: All the Hits (212,000) was the order of its night.

Ten’s woes continue with The Project its best with 493,000. Its news managed 431,000 and Jamie’s Quick And Easy Food had a less than filling 346,000.

ABC’s night went thus: 7pm new bulletin (746,000), Gruen (718,000), Hard Quiz (598,000), 7:30 (557,000), Rosehaven (444,000) and The Letdown (297,000).

It’s clear all of SBS’s audience were watching the soccer. Its best, Europe’s Last Kingdom Warriors, managing only 194,000.
