It was an eventful year this year for Aussies, according to new research by Facebook, seeing many Aussies well-loved and well-travelled.
Facebook has analysed the many trends on the social media platform this year, from the most talked about topics globally and nationally, major life events, sport, entertainment and where Aussies are checking into.
From the analysis, Facebook has determined that the top ten most talked about topics around the world are:
1. Pope Francis
3. Royal Baby
5. Margaret Thatcher
6. Harlem Shake
7. Miley Cyrus
8. Boston Marathon
9. Tour de France
10. Nelson Mandela
However, although these are global topics, the top ten most talked about topics amongst us Aussies sees only the political topics and Princess Kate and her baby as common ground with the rest of the world.
Here’s the list Facebook generated.
2. Princess Kate
4. Kevin Rudd
5. Grand final
9. Tony Abbott
10. Big Brother
While last year saw entertainment and sport topics nestled comfortably within the top ten, it seems Aussies have taken a more political approach to their status updates and conversations this year.
The Royal Family is also still very much in our minds with Princess Kate being the second most talked about topic amongst us.
This year has also been very eventful for Aussies in terms of relationships and travelling, with the top life event being in a new relationship, getting engaged or getting married.
Maybe love and travelling go together as travelling was the second biggest life event for Aussies this year.
In fact, the top place for checking in amongst Australians and the rest of the world is Disneyland, closely followed by Siam Paragon in Bangkok, Thailand, with Times Square in NYC coming in third.
Within Australia Melbourne appeared to be the most popular place to check in, with the MCG grabbing the top spot again from last year and the Crown following behind.
Only Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast managed to snag places in the top 10, however it’s clear Melbourne was the social place for check ins this year.
Our love of sport was confirmed this year with three of the top ten topics trending were sport-related, and with the Ashes underway the term “cricket” has become the third most mentioned term overall.
There were over 2 million mentions of “cricket” during the first Ashes test.
Where One Direction was the top most mentioned term by Australians last year, this year they didn’t even make the top ten.
However they’ve still managed to slip into third place as the third most mentioned term amongst the other TV and entertainment topics.
Other findings from Facebook show that Princess Kate was the most buzzed about public figure, closely followed by our politicians and GST was the most talked about political issue.
It’s been a hectic year for Australians, who knows what will happen next year.
