Apologetic Nova Host Retracts Claims Hamish & Andy Pinched “True Story” Idea

Nova host David “Luttsy” Lutteral has this morning retracted claims he made on his breakfast radio show that comics Hamish Blake and Andy Lee had stolen the idea for their Channel Nine venture True Story With Hamish & Andy.

On Tuesday, Lutteral (below) claimed on-air that he’d told Lee, while in a New York bar, about a pilot he was working on called Cracking Yarns that bore a remarkable similarity to Blake and Lee’s new show that debuted on Monday night to huge audiences. He claimed Nine had even begun filming episodes of the show but eventually decided not to go ahead with it.

However, this morning on his Ash, Kip and Luttsy program, Lutteral admitted he’d got his story twisted and conceded the duo had scripted the idea for the show some 12 months prior to the alleged New York incident.

Lutteral told listeners (his comments reported on Nine’s The Fix): “Some things were said on our breakfast radio program on Monday about Hamish and Andy that were pretty serious allegations about the concept of their program true story being stolen from me after a conversation between Andy and me in New York in December 2014.

“I fully accept now that that was not the case. I’ve now seen the concept document from 2013 developed by Hamish and Andy’s team for True Story. It is clear to me that they had conceived and documented the format for true story over a year before I met with Andy in New York.

“While I pitched a concept that had some similarities, I accept that Hamish and Andy came up with their idea independently from mine. Wrongly accusing someone of stealing material is one of the most offensive things someone can do in our industry.

“I apologise to Hamish and Andy and their team for implying they took my idea,” Lutteral said.
