Off the back of claims by Fairfax Media that Chris Gayle exposed himself to a woman at last year’s ICC World Cup, Gayle has launched action against the media company and has hired top defamation lawyer Mark O’Brien.

According to media reports the West Indian cricketer is reported to be suing Fairfax for defamation, the cherry on top of a media circus that has been Gayle’s week so far.

The newspaper claimed Gayle had exposed himself to a female employee working during the ICC World Cup during a training session in Sydney.

It is alleged that Gayle was in the dressing room when the female staffer walked in to collect a sandwich, under the impression that no one was in there, when he pulled down the towel he was wrapped in and said, “Are you looking for this?”

Gayle immediately denied these claims following the publication, with his management releasing a statement that said:

“Chris Gayle has strongly denied allegations first published by Fairfax Media that he indecently exposed himself to woman during last year’s World Cup in Sydney.

“Despite such denials Fairfax Media continues to publish the false and defamatory allegations which have received widespread re-publication in media throughout the world.

“As a result Chris Gayle has retained Mark O’Brien, a leading Australian media lawyer to immediately commence defamation proceedings against Fairfax Media.”

O’Brien once represented Fairfax Media in its own defamation cases, but last year represented Joe Hockey in his defamation action launched against the newspaper publisher.

Gayle has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons this week, following his inappropriate attempts to ask sports reporter Mel McLaughlin out on live television, and being slapped with a $10,000 fine from his Renegades franchise over the interview.

Cricket Australia is believed to be so angry that Gayle may not be invited back for next year’s Big Bash in Australia.
