The season return of Ten’s Australian drama Offspring won its timeslot last night as 931,000 people tuned in to see how protagonist Nina Proudman was faring with a new baby and loss of her partner, Patrick.

Offspring was Thursday evening’s eighth most watched show, beating rivals Nine and Seven to the 8.30pm slot. The season return of Offspring is down on the heart-wrenching finale which won 1.106 million viewers.

The 931,000 viewers are in addition to the 20,000 views the first episode received in under 24 hours on Ten’s catch-up service Tenplay last week. The episode was put online the week before its official television broadcast for 48 hours or up to 20,000 views, whichever came first. Media agencies told B&T Ten is “leading the charge” when it comes to using its catch-up service as a tool for drumming up social buzz and engagement with shows with previews.

Seven’s The Blacklist, which kicked off at 8.45pm, had 744,000 viewers while Nine’s US comedy Mom pulled in 615,000.

Ten’s MasterChef Australia came second in the reality battle last night behind Seven’s House Rules as The Voice took a night off from its ratings domination.

Despite the absence of The Voice Seven’s House Rules could not rise to the top, with Nine’s The Big Bang Theory (1.151 million) proving more popular.

House Rules was the fifth most watched show of the night with 1.072 million viewers. MasterChef sat in 10th place with 889,000 people watching the contestants’ culinary war.

Seven did have the night’s most watched show in Seven News (1.194 million) and had the largest combined share of all free-to-air viewers, sitting on 30.8%.

Seven’s main channel share was 20.3%. Nine sat on a total 27.2% with 19.7% for its primary channel.

Ten was in third place on 21.1% with 15.6% going to its main channel.

The ABC followed in fourth place on 15.8% with 9.9% for ABC1. SBS had a total 5.1% with 3.9% of that going to SBS ONE.
