Radio station 2Day FM is facing an unprecedented suspension as the media regulator considers taking the broadcaster off air as punishment for the “royal prank” phone call.

The station’s owner, Southern Cross Austereo, has vowed to fight the sanction, arguing that the Australian Communications and Media Authority has overreached.

“ACMA has the power to make an administrative finding or express an opinion about whether a criminal offence has been committed,” a Southern Cross spokeswoman said.

“It does not have any power to find a broadcaster or its presenters to have committed an offence.”
