The New Zealand singer Lorde has taken out a full-page ad in The New Zealand Herald thanking fans for their support which many are reading as a veiled swipe at the prejudices faced by many female recording artists.

Earlier in the week, the singer missed out on a Grammy Award after her album Melodrama was the only female artist shortlisted for the album of the year. She was also the only nominee not asked to perform solo on the night.

Just 11 out of the 84 Grammy statues went to women at this year’s ceremony.

The full page ad, which appears to be hand written note by the artist herself said: “I just wanted to say thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for loving & embracing Melodrama the way you did. Thank you, also, for believing in female musicians. You set a beautiful precedent!”

At the awards, she had a poem by feminist artist Jenny Holzer sewed into the back of her red grown which discusses “the overthrow of the oppressors”.

Discontent around the gender imbalance gave rise to the hashtag #GrammysSoMale, which was circulated during the ceremony. The Recording Academy president, Neil Portnow, also caused a storm when he said female artists needed “to step up” if they wanted more equal representation before adding that he had no actual experience of the obstacles faced by women.
