Independent education provider, Macleay College, will debut its first broadcast news channel, Macleay TV, to an international audience with a special report on poverty issues across Sydney and Melbourne.
The segment will form part of the Global News: Poverty report commissioned by pioneering UK education institute, University of Salford, which is based alongside UK broadcast powerhouses BBC and ITV Granada in MediaCityUk.
The Global News: Poverty initiative provides a select group of international education institutes with a global platform to expose how poverty affects their immediate communities; addressing taboos, smashing stereotypes and revealing the hidden stories.
Macleay journalism students will be lifting the lid on the often-unreported side to Australia’s chic beach global typecast, with Sydney reporters unveiling a special report on the city’s underprivileged indigenous populace, while both Melbourne and Sydney reporters will cast a light on each city’s poor, deprived and homeless communities.
Macleay College head of journalism, Stephen Davis, said: “Being offered an opportunity to contribute to this global broadcast event is important for our students, who now have a platform to represent our community and contribute to the debate that poverty isn’t just a third-world issue.
“Our newsroom is as much a public channel as it is an educational resource for our students, so this initiative is a great way to announce our evolvement into a multimedia network that reports on stories of substance and international relevance.”
The Macleay College Australian segment is being produced at the institute’s newly opened street-front TV studio in Surry Hills, and will be available to view independently on Macleay TV after the live air commences.
