Eastern Standard Times Hold Launch Event In Deeply Cultural Setting
Global media network Eastern Standard Times had their official launch event on Thursday (23/6) night at the Lucky Kwong restaurant in Sydney’s South Eveleigh, with the focus being placed on how this platform will provide Asian communities in Australia with a greater insight on what they need to know.
Editor-in-chief Keshia Hannam, who served as hostess for the evening, pointed out the importance of the launch of the platform in Australia, adding that she “look(s) forward to creating something that the next generations can look back on and feel proud of”.
“We found that, in launching Eastern Standard Times, which has been creating content for (the last) six months, so we’re a baby (laughs), there’s a resonance with audiences, particularly millennials and Gen Z’s, as (those) people feel more comfortable to share who they are and expect to see that represented in places that they look”, said Hannam.
“I look forward to working with all of you and hopefully shaping some of the stories that we share with the community. I look forward to thinking about what Australia looks like. I think we are a country that has huge potential, but also has a lot of reckoning to do and maybe this is the beginning of having that discussion.
“This is a beautiful, full-circle moment for me, and for many of us, I imagine, to launch Eastern Standard Times, which seeks to create a voice for Asian people around the world.”
Following Hannam’s opening words, the journalist went on to introduce well-known chef Kylie Kwong to those attending the event and tell the story of how the two met. Kwong then took the floor to answer a few questions about how her personal life and background is reflected in the dishes that the lucky attendees had the opportunity of tasting.
The published author went on to discuss how during the pandemic she found new ways to help the community through her delicious cooking, while she also talked about the special moment when she went to visit her great-grandfather Kwong Sue Duk’s house in China.

During the event, a number of news stories and reports from Eastern Standard Times were shown, including an interview with Aussie actress Shirong Wu, an explanation of K-Pop band BTS‘ rise to prominence and a story about how Asian representation in Australian parliament has doubled.
Each of these reports showed the hard work, professionalism and dedication by the Eastern Standard Times team to deliver the highest quality of news and information to the Asian communities both in Australia and the rest of the world.
