Some 3.2 Million Aussies Use SVOD As Netflix Still Dominates

New research by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has found that 3.2 million Australians watched a subscription video on-demand service (SVOD) in the six months to June.

Netflix remains the clear leader in the crowded local SVOD market with 2.5 million of us using it in the six months to June.

Yesterday, B&T reported that experts had argued that Netflix’s arrival on our shores had stopped people pirating content.

The study of 1500 people did not reveal who used what streaming service and most of the local streamers have been relunctant to reveal their actual number of subscribers.

The ACMA defined a typical SVOD subscriber as being under 35, university educated, urbane and with a high income. Unsurprisingly, people aged 18-34 accounted for 58 per cent of Australian SVOD users.

It’s estimated that about 2.6 million Australians have access to Netflix which would mean it’s in about one million Australian homes. Netflix has claimed it has about 75 per cent of the local market. Stan – the JV between the Nine Network and Fairfax Media – has about half-a-million subscribers. The other players have been less forthcoming with actual num
