Macleay College Offers Scholarship For Investigative Journalist Centre

Macleay College is offering one aspiring journalist the opportunity to win a coveted scholarship worth $6,000 at the world-renowned, award-winning, Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) in California.

The CIR is a not for profit group of reporters who specialise in socially conscious citizen journalism. Their investigations have made headlines all over the world, including hard-hitting exposes on Rikers Island and America’s Worst Charities.

The lucky winner will scour the streets of San Francisco and Oakland seeking out dynamic investigative stories to report across multiple platforms.

Stephen Davis, head of journalism at Macleay College, said that the scholarship is designed to be an exciting incentive for an ambitious upcoming Australian journalist to get a taste of international offerings.

“At Macleay, we endeavour to produce the next generation of top-quality journalists and instil them with the hands-on experience needed to step straight into a busy newsroom. Scholarships and internships, such as this, are a great way to boost our students’ practical skills and ensure they are industry-ready,” said Davis.

Last year’s CIR scholarship winner, Alex Lee, took home the prize with her entry – Twitter for Terrorists that focused on how a social media platform is reshaping the war on terror.

During her time at the CIR, Lee was attached to three teams for stories commissioned by national US media outlets; including an investigation on an international credit card trafficking operation, and a look into private companies exploiting returned soldiers on education projects. Ms. Lee is now currently interning at CNN in Hong Kong.

Submissions are now open to all students completing a journalism degree at Macleay, with entrants asked to submit a unique multi-media investigation or feature story by the deadline date of 1 July 2015. The winner will be announced on 15 July 2015.
