The latest Twitter frenzy, involving screaming teenagers and a ‘real’ exorcist priest, has just been a clever little marketing stunt for a new Horror film The Gallows.

The hashtag #charliecharliechallenge has been swirling around the Twittersphere. The game involves using two pens and a paper to create a makeshift Ouija board, drawing a grid on the paper to make four panels-two labelled ‘yes’ and the other two ‘no’. Then players call a ‘demon’ by saying “Charlie, Charlie can we play?” or “Charlie, Charlie are you here?” Depending if ‘charlie’ or ‘gravity’ is present the pencil will move, to the ‘answers’.

A Christian Today article warned these crazy youths not to mess around with demons and the Occult. According to a Vatican-approved exorcist, Spanish priest Jose Antonio Fortea, playing the game “will result in other spirits beginning to enter into even more frequent communication. And so then the person really can suffer much worse consequences from the demons”.

Turns out people and the Vatican are just loosing their minds over a marketing campaign. The #charliecharliechallenge has been created to promote a new horror film The Gallows. According to IMDB the low budget, ‘found-footage’ horror film is about a bunch of students who “20 years after a horrific school play accident, try to honour the anniversary of the tragedy – but soon discover that some things are better left alone.” https://youtu.be/5FIkKpqUx1U

Once again, a horror film has used clever ‘found footage’ marketing techniques to attract screaming teens.
