Disney+ Hits 103 Million Subscribers, Fewer Than Predicted

Streaming service Disney+ has officially reached 103.8 million subscribers worldwide, though fewer than expected by Wall Street.

FactSet analysts had predicted that the service would grow to 109.3 million users.

In the most recent quarter, the service added 8.7 million subscribers. By the same period last year, Disney+ had 94.9 million subscribers.

Disney+’s slower than anticipated growth is perhaps indicative of the impact of the streaming boom of 2020 cooling down as society opens back up again.

In 2020, Disney+ entered the market with incredible success. In March this year, it hit 100 million subscribers, making it the fastest-growing streaming service since Netflix.

One of the platform’s appeals is the fact that it hosts all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including popular new television spinoffs WandaVision and The Falcon & The Winter Soldier.

However, Disney+ has also increased the price of its subscriptions by a US dollar, with monthly costs now at US$7.99.

Despite signs of the streaming boom slowing down, there seems to be no end to new streaming platforms. ViacomCBS’s Paramount+ has already launched in the US, and will launch in Australia as part of the rebrand of 10 All Access.
