There are some pretty remarkable people in our industry, each offering their own unique perspective to adland.

While we spend so much time learning about our peers’ career highlights, B&T, in partnership with Carat Australia, thought it high-time to dig a little deeper, and find out what makes the shining stars of our industry tick and, at times, tock.

So, for the next few weeks, we will be publishing a series of personal profiles.

Get ready to laugh, cry and be taken on an emotional rollercoaster as we hear more about adland’s most remarkable marketers.

Adobe’s APAC head of experience marketing Clare Cahill: The Geek Girl

I am a self-professed geek, mum of one, very curious and purpose-led. I’m also always wanting to give our customers goosebumps.

My daily motivator is my ability to create every day. I had a light bulb moment in my career when I realised you have to ask for what you want in your job. Tell your manager where you want to go. Sitting there and expecting promotions does not advance your career.

The best advice I ever got was to always hire people better than you who can take your job, and my tip for marketing graduates is to always be learning and find a great mentor. Be humble. One of the biggest career disasters that surprisingly turned into my biggest career learning was launching an event without checking the trademark. In a nutshell, lawyers were involved, but it had a happy ending.

We renamed and relaunched within a weekend and it became a massive success. Lesson learnt – make sure you trademark check before you finalise on naming an event! In terms of tech, I’m a bit of a geek at heart, so there isn’t much I don’t understand.

However, there is plenty of useless tech out there! I have to say I am enjoying my Alexa. I bought one in the UK and one in the US before it came it here, so they both have different accents!

Thinking back to what I wanted to do when I was 10, I can’t remember back that far, but it would have been something creative – probably an actress! I did receive a few “try harders” in my school reports when I was  younger.

I know if I wasn’t a marketer, I’d be doing something that allows me to be creative that can also cause social change. My favourite all-time hero is Cindy Gallop. I said to her recently, “I want to be you when I grow up!” She is one feisty, smart woman who is afraid of nothing.

A sheer joy to listen to and such an amazing thought leader. I tend to listen to books as I am on the move a
lot, so I am a big Audible fan. The most recent was Scaling Up Excellence by Robert Sutton and Stanford colleague Huggy Rao. I also cry all the time. I know I am truly connected when I shed a tear – never a sign of weakness in my opinion!
