TikTok’s Millie Henderson has gone viral on Linkedin for sharing a campaign highlighting the rise in domestic cases in the UK when the soccer is on.
The FIFA World Cup is currently eclipsing the news cycle, with everyone excitedly barracking for their teams, but Henderson pointed out that our obsession with sports does come at a cost.
While soccer clearly isn’t responsible for causing domestic violence, there is no denying that numbers do surge when there’s a big soccer tournament on.
Henderson wrote on Linkedin: “Women’s Aid collaborated with Corbin Shaw to highlight the rise in domestic abuse cases when the football is on.
“When England loses a World Cup game, incidents of domestic violence increase by 38 per cent and (even more shockingly) by 26 per cent when they win.
“Domestic abuse will affect 1 in 4 women in the UK, as well as 1 in 6 men. This leads to an average of 2 women a week being murdered in the UK due to domestic abuse.
“If you or someone you know is being domestically abused, please speak up. You could potentially save a life.”
The post has since been liked over 10,000 times and has started an important conversation online.
Perhaps, the biggest takeaway is the power that Linkedin has and that by sharing campaigns that matter, we can all help get some really important messages out there.
