Lisa Davies has announced she will be stepping down as editor of The Sydney Morning Herald, after almost five years in the role.
Davies has been at The Sydney Morning Herald since 2012. In 2011, she left her role as a chief court reporter for The Daily Telegraph and joined the Herald as a crime editor.
Davies quickly cemented herself as a huge talent for The Sydney Morning Herald. She became the deputy news director and investigations editor in 2013, before ultimately snagging the top job of editor in 2017.
Interestingly, Davies has yet to reveal, what she plans to do next! Though, she did announce she’d be finishing up projects for the next month.
Cosima Marriner, The Herald’s deputy editor will step into Davie’s role until a replacement is found.
Davies said: “After almost five years in the best job in journalism I have decided it’s time to move on.
“The last two years, in particular, have tested us all in ways we couldn’t have imagined so as things return to a more even keel, the time feels right for me to look towards what’s next.
“I’m going spend the next month finishing up a few projects. For all your loyalty to the Herald, commitment to the best kind of journalism and the support you’ve shown me when I needed it most, thank you so much.”
Tory Maguire, the executive editor of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, said: “Over her five years as, editor, she (Lisa) has led her team through the major disruption of the restructure, held the newsroom together during the biggest challenges of the pandemic, and was a crucial part of the huge team effort to ensure the long term success of The Sydney Morning Herald.
“I’m sure whatever Lisa does next will see her continue to make a big contribution to the fabric of Sydney life. The plan is to conduct a recruitment process for a new editor that includes internal and external candidates. Finding the right person to take on this prestigious role will take some time.”
