Ash Barty’s Win Smashes Ratings Records For Nine & Puts 1.2 Million On The Men’s Final

The Australian Open women’s tennis final smashed the men’s tennis final in the ratings – according to OzTam.

Ash Barty’s match with Danielle Collins raked in 2,838,000 OzTAM metro viewers and Rafael Nadal’s match with Daniil Medvedev racked up 1,613,000 viewers.

Is it naff to say girl power? Barty won in straight sets though there were a few tense moments that clearly kept viewers hooked.

Barty’s win captured the biggest ever audience for an Australian Open Women’s final – since OzTam began reporting on it.

It also got more eyeballs than most men’s final matches have earned in the last decade – basically, it was huge ratings win for Nine and an incredible testament to Australia’s love of Barty.

The Age reported that we haven’t seen such big numbers since Lleyton Hewitt took on Marat Safin in 2005 – which garnered 5.7 million viewers – although Hewitt didn’t win he did propose to Bec Hewitt – back when she was Bec Cartwright – so love won!

The Australian Open has also been helping Nine win the night fairly consistently and it also introduced the world to some pretty fancy and expensive drink bottles by Ralph Lauren.

Nine’s Australian Open coverage has proved to be a rating’s winner and a morale booster for Australians – literally, the whole nation was having a party for Barty!

However, Nine isn’t the only network smiling currently, 10’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! Proved to be the number one entertainment show. Basically, if you weren’t talking about tennis you were talking about celebrities eating worms

Which honestly is way more fun than discussing the pandemic.

Here at B&T we are off to buy water bottles with Ash Barty’s face on it.
