Co-Founder and CEO of Atlassian Scott Farquhar (main photo) has taken to Twitter to call out Telsa CEO and billionaire, Elon Musk’s return to the office mandate.

Last week a memo was leaked where Musk called for all his workers to be back in the office for a minimum of 40 hours. Musk, himself, seemingly confirmed the memo was correct via Twitter, where he wrote that employees that wanted flexibility, “Should pretend to work somewhere else.”

Interestingly, Farquhar took to Twitter to call out Musk’s hot take in a 5 part Twitter thread.

Farquhar tweeted: “News from @elonmusk & @tesla today feels like something out of the 1950s: “Everyone at Tesla is required to spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week”. Very different approach to what we are taking at Atlassian, and here’s why. (1/5)

“Atlassian employees choose every day where and how they want to work – we call it Team Anywhere. This has been key for our continued growth. (2/5)

“Why? This is the future of how we will work. Highly distributed, highly flexible. Yes, right now, it’s not perfect, but we have to experiment to get it right. (3/5)

“In the past year alone, 42% of our new hires globally live 2 or more hours from an office. There is great talent all over the world – not just within a 1hr radius of our offices. (4/5)

“We’re setting our sights on growing Atlassian to 25K employees by FY26. Are any Tesla employees interested? https://atlassian.com/company/careers (5/5).”

Musk’s take was set to polarise, but it’s always interesting to get insight from other CEOs or why they are embracing a more hybrid work model.
