Metro Media chief executive Jack Matthews and Australian Regional Publishing head Allan Browne will leave Fairfax as part of the group's massive leadership shake-up.

Fairfax Media this morning confirmed it will restructure its Australian operations and consolidate its executive leadership in a bid to simplify its business model.

As well as Matthews and Browne departing, the group will reshuffe its management structure, with Allen Williams, head of its New Zealand operations, appointed to head the group's Australian publishing media division.

In statement made on the Australian Securities Exchange this morning, the media giant announced its intention to restructure its operations here into five business division as it pushes forward with a shift in its organisational focus from print to digital.

As a result of the restructure Fairfax will have five distinct business divisions: Australian Publishing Media, Domain, Digital Ventures, Fairfax Radio and Fairfax New Zealand.

When contacted by B&T this morning, a Fairfax spokesperson said the group was not commenting on how this massive restructure will impact staff redundancies at the company.

Meanwhile, Andrew Boyle, general manager of the southern region of Fairfax New Zealand, has been appointed acting managing director of Fairfax New Zealand.

"The next phase of Fairfax’s transformation involves simplifying the organisational structure to optimise opportunities that a predominantly digital future provides," said the Fairfax statement.

"The two central elements of the new structure are the consolidation of the Australian publishing businesses to drive revenues and efficiencies, and unlocking the potential of our digital businesses," it added.
