Meghan Markle Attempts To Trademark A 450 Year Old Word For Her Spotify Podcast

Meghan Markle is launching a podcast via Spotify and has now lodged papers attempting to trademark the word, ‘archetypes.’

Interestingly the word Markle is trying to trademark has been around since the 1540s, so it may be pretty hard for her to claim ownership of the word.

The definition of archetypes is a very typical example of a certain person or thing. So you might have heard the word used like, “He was the archetype of a salesman.”

However, according to news.com.au, Markle has officially filed an application at The United States Patient and Trademark Office.

Interestingly, if Markle’s application is approved, the production company that she shares with her husband, Archewell Audio, will own the trademark, not Spotify that she’s doing the podcast via.

When you trademark a word, it gives the owner exclusive rights to connect one brand with that word. This might not be very easy in this case because the word archetypes is already being used by skincare and cleaning products businesses.

Truthfully, though, it’s hard to claim rights over a word that has existed in the English language for so long, even if it isn’t commonly used.
