20 QUESTIONS WITH Katie Trew

1. What award did you win?

Creative producer.

2. Best thing about winning a Women In Media Award?

To be recognised on a national platform for work I am doing in little old Perth is incredible. Western Australia is really punching above its weight in the creative industries at the moment.

3. How many trophies do you now have in your trophy cabinet?

This is a first for my personal trophy cabinet, but I was a part of the team who bought home a D&AD Yellow Pencil and a few Cannes Lions this year for our Hungry Puffs Campaign for Foodbank WA.

4. One thing you’d do to change your industry for the better?

I would love to see more opportunities for passionate starters in the film and video industries to get real-life experience with seasoned professionals.

5. What makes you mad?

Single use coffee cups.

6. What makes you happy?

Watching my 3 and 5 year old girls performing shows in my lounge room.

7. How would colleagues describe you?

Yikes that’s a tough one. Probably…loud. And ambitious?

8. How would you describe your colleagues?

My team at King Street are badass. All of them are multi-skilled and uber-talented.

9. Favourite industry hero?

My current professional crush is Jane Evans who founded The Uninvisibility Project – if you aren’t familiar with her look her up.

10. Your one career regret?

I wish I had switched off a little more during my maternity leave breaks. I think I was worried that if I switched off entirely I wouldn’t be able to switch back on. Totally unfounded

Surround yourself with the very best people you can find. Be ruthless and make sure they are worthy.

12. Best stress reliever?

Exercise. And margaritas.

13. Dream holiday destination?

I would love to travel (slowly) around the South of France.

14. The one book you’d recommend?

Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton  – amazing.

15. If you weren’t doing this what would you be doing?

In my spare time (laughs maniacally) I am a wedding celebrant. If the producer things doesn’t work out for me I would focus on that.

16. Where will you be in 10 years’ time?

I have never really been one for the 5 or 10 year plan so I struggle with this question. I honestly don’t know.

17. The one technology you just don’t understand?

The Cloud. What tha?

18. Your most embarrassing media addiction?

I am embarrassed about how much time I spend on my phone and it’s something I am really trying to manage.

19. Go-to karaoke song?

I love the big showtunes. Big Spender perhaps?

20. Do you replace the milk in the staff fridge?

Look I don’t, but in my defence, I don’t really use the milk either. I drink litres of peppermint tea when I am in the office.
