West Indies Cricketer Chris Gayle Wins Fairfax Defamation Case

West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle has won his defamation case against Fairfax Media after the publisher accused him of exposing his genitals to a female massage therapist, Leanne Russell, in Sydney in 2015.

The allegations were printed by an Age journalist during the Cricket World Cup and Gayle suggested during the defamation proceedings that it was some sort of payback by the female journalist following his infamous “don’t blush baby” controversy.

However, in the NSW Supreme Court today the three woman, one man jury found in favour of Gayle and agreed that the articles had no truth to them and were published out of malice.

Gayle was present in court to hear the verdict. A hearing on damages will be held at a later date.

Gayle claimed the articles were designed to “destroy” him, they were “heartbreaking” and he claimed he’d become nervous and reclusive around women since their publication.

Fairfax defended the charges saying the articles were in the public interest and the publisher had acted responsibly. However, both claims were rejected by the jury.
