UnLtd’s Big Game: Presenting Team PHD

Calling all game-nerds (and non-game nerds – we don’t discriminate here)! In case you haven’t heard, the legends over at UnLtd are launching a virtual gaming tournament – the Big Game. And, it’s all happening live on Tuesdays at 4pm.

What’s it entail? Basically, 24 teams across the industry will be competing over 5 weeks in a game of Rocket League, all live-streamed over Twitch. We’re not even going to attempt to understand what any of that means but we’re behind you, adland!

Each week, B&T will be bringing you some rather entertaining team profiles, from how the teams plan on warming up for the game (finger stretching?) to what their nutrition plan is.

You can watch the games here https://www.twitch.tv/unltdaus.

Without further ado, meet Team PHD.

Team:
PHD (Seed #2) (Heart #1)

 Team members:

  • The Rocket League field is no stranger to this top contender as he’s been around since season 2 of the game (currently in its 14th season). Although he has taken a hiatus from the sport to focus on other activities such as napping and listening to country music he comfortably picks up right where he left off. Expect some crazy challenges on the ball, calculated crosses and some big plays from this old veteran.

  • Picking up the game on day one of its release it was love at first sight, sinking countless hours for the first 5 seasons, before slowly tampering off. His love has been reinvigorated putting on his tyre’s and zooming on to the pitch. A team player, never wanting to let his team down, always focused to get the ball down the other side. Best defence is an offense.

Favourite game of all times:

Rocket League

COD: Warzone

Red Dead Redemption

Minecraft

Portal 2

What’s your team’s game plan for Big Game:

Although coming in at no.2 Seed PHD is cautious not to let this effect game day strategy. Word on the street is that the team have employed the likes of professional e-sports team Cloud 9 to set up a stringent 45 step prep plan ahead of the start of the tournament that remains a heavily guarded secret.

How has the team been preparing in the lead up to the Big Game:
As soon as this tournament was announced PHD pulled their athletes out to a secret undisclosed location somewhere in the greater Pyrmont region for an intensive 5min training course to cover the fundamentals of the game and to maximise team chemistry.

Unfortunately, this had to be scrapped due to social distancing and team preparation changed to prioritizing snacking while gaming to increase performance.

What are your predictions for Big Game:

This will be a tough tournament no doubt. Team PHD have some tough contenders coming in from all corners of the global with the likes of Jimbae_ from team Carat (Zac K – ex PHD) but the PHD team is confident they can pull together to get the W.

There is likely going to be lots of aerial misses, huge blunders and some sweet goals!

I don’t recommend blinking otherwise you might miss out!

What’s the one thing you wish people knew about gaming?

That it’s such a great platform to be able to connect with others. It can also be more social then watching TV or going to the movies.
