There are two guarantees come the 1st of April – brands jumping on the April Fool’s bandwagon and, most, if not all, their joke campaigns being truly dreadful.
So it’s hats off to language app Duolingo who’ve just posted its ‘prank’ April 1 campaign that surprisingly doesn’t stink.
The spot parodies the ubiquitous Love Island/dating show premise where, in this instance, it’s a house full of attractive singles, none of whom speak the same language.
Contestants are challenged to do daily language lessons or face the consequences of a merciless Duolingo Owl who is knocking off contestants one-by-one.
So authentic is the spot, some people are actually calling for the idea to be made into a real dating show.
However, a Duolingo spokesperson confirmed the TVC was “not a real show”.
