The New York Times has copped a mocking on social media after an article appeared online wondering whether Canada was ‘hip’, with many adamant Canada always has been ‘hip’.

The article on The New York Times referenced previous Canadian fashion sense, which was apparently not very up-market, with its new Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, who has been regaled on various media channels for his views, style and youth.

Similarly, the article references the new face for Louis Vuitton’s Ombre collection, Xavier Dolan, who is apparently very fashion conscious, alongside singer Justin Bieber and rapper Drake.

Oh, Canada! The land of maple syrup and politeness is suddenly… hip? https://t.co/XHDYd3lzAv pic.twitter.com/eH5gQyR8Qr

“But the notion that our neighbour to the north is a frozen cultural wasteland populated with hopelessly unstylish citizens is quickly becoming so outdated as to be almost offensive,” writes Peter Stevenson for The New York Times Style pages.

The piece has been handed a fair amount of mockery on social media. Check out some of the responses below.

@NYTStyles It’s too bad you didn’t look north earlier because Canada, and Canadians, have been cool for a long time. Sorry you missed out — Fiona D (@FionaDouglas96) January 17, 2016

@NYTStyles “newly” hip? ppffft. you mean, the rest of the world caught up.

@NYTStyles the tone of this is so condescending. Thanks for not making jokes about us anymore? — Maria (@mariootsa) January 16, 2016

@NYTStyles You are embarrassing yourselves. We are proud to be a #Hip country, a country where racism doesn’t exist #Fail #bigtime #Canada

@nytimes I’ve always thought of it as a hip and happening place. — Heidi (@Teanaway) January 18, 2016
