It seems it’s time for Vegemite to convert an American celebrity, after Selena Gomez made it very clear that she’s not a fan of the Australian spread.

In a clip from her HBO show, Selena + Chef, which she posted to Twitter on Sunday (local time), the singer songwriter made the error of trying Vegemite by the spoonful and immediately spat it out.

“Chef CurtisStone  shared some of his favorite Australian treats with me, and let’s just say…Vegemite is not my favorite,” Gomez said in the Tweet.

“No, no, no, no, no,” Gomez said as soon as she brought the spoon to her mouth, before spitting it out.

“I’m so sorry Australia, I love you guys so much,” she said afterward while continuing to gag.

Gomez was joined by her friend Raquelle Stevens, who had a similar reaction, saying: “Oh my god, it’s so disgusting.”

Selena + Chef, which recently debuted its second season on the streaming platform HBO Max, is a show which features Gomez cooking while video chatting with top chefs like Roy Choi, Jose Andres, and Curtis Stone, as they cook along in their own kitchens.

Gomez explained in the Vegemite clip that Stone, a resident Aussie chef and her first guest on the second season, had sent her a box of his favourite—banal and predictable—Australian treats.

The treats included Anzac biscuits, mint slices, Tim Tams, violet crumble, and Vegemite. Gomez said she enjoyed most of the treats, except for the violet crumble and the Vegemite.

However, in response to her reaction, many social media users noted that Vegemite is absolutely not for eating by the spoonful.

“Vegemite is best on toast with triple the butter. Or a sandwich with butter and cheese,” one user said.

“Folks, Vegemite is like horseradish… Or hot mustard… You don’t sniff it, rub it in your eyes, or eat it by the spoonful,” another added. “You spread it thinly on something, in this case toast…”

While another said: “You need some lovely hot toast e.g. sourdough Breadwith heaps of butter and for a novice like you just a teeny little scraping of vegemite.

“Aussies do not eat Vegemite by the spoonful! It is not Nutella or Peanut Butter. It is it’s own magic.”
