Rebel Wilson Fumes At Bauer’s Decision To Appeal $4.5m Defamation Win
Actress Rebel Wilson has taken to Twitter to register her disgust at Bauer Media’s decision on Monday to appeal her $4.56 million defamation win.
In a series of tweets, Wilson said she was not surprised Bauer was appealing the decision “considering their disgusting history”.
Bauer has been ordered to pay $650,000 in general damages and $3,917,472 in special damages to Wilson for a series of articles in its women’s titles that inferred the actor was a serial liar. The payout is reportedly the biggest in Australian history.
Wilson has said she will donate the full amount to student scholarships, the Australian film industry and (unnamed) charities.
Wilson tweeted: “‘I am disappointed that this now delays my plans to support Australian charities and Australians in the entertainment industry. Nevertheless if this is a chance to expose more of their disgraceful practices & present more evidence on damages, I welcome it.”
She also was unhappy that Bauer had hired PR firm Thrive to say “positive things about their appeal. All orchestrated and total rubbish”.
On Monday, Bauer issued a media statement saying it would appeal the decision. Bauer’s general counsel Adrian Gross quoted as saying: “It’s important for us to revisit this unprecedented decision on the quantum of damages, which also has broad implications for the media industry.”
