Fairfax Radio Network’s 3AW increases its lead as Melbourne’s Number One Radio Station

Fairfax Radio Network’s powerhouse Melbourne News Talk station 3AW has again dominated the latest ratings with wins in all sessions across the day and once again takes the crown as the number one station in Melbourne, while Sydney’s 2UE continues to increase its audience with a 5.7% share, recording the highest share gain in the Sydney radio market, according to Survey 6 results released today.

The continuing strong news cycle has seen audiences turn to trusted news, analysis and commentary from Fairfax Radio Network’s News Talk stations, seeing 3AW record an impressive 13.6% share overall, with Breakfast duo Ross and John notching another survey win to reach 102 consecutive surveys. Sydney News Talk station 2UE’s new line-up continues to attract a new audience across all shifts, with an especially significant rise from Breakfast teams John Stanley and Garry Linnell through to George and Paul on Weekends. Perth’s News Talk station 6PR’s audience has continued to remain strong, led by Breakfast with Steve Mills and Basil Zempilas at 11.4%.

“It’s pleasing to see that our strategy of putting listeners at the heart of everything we do is working for 2UE and 6PR in particular, as the revitalised line-ups continue to resonate with listeners. The finals of the winter football codes, as well as a strong domestic and international news cycle, particularly with the growing terrorism threats on our shores, has seen audiences turn to our News Talk presenters as trusted sources of information and analysis. As late as this morning 3AW broke the story, widely reported across Fairfax Radio Network, of a series of counter terrorism raids coordinated across the suburbs of Melbourne, ” Fairfax Radio Network National Content Director Clark Forbes said.

“The increasing campaign against the terror threat posed by ISIS and Australia’s response, the G20 Summit, Spring Racing Carnival and Phillip Island MotoGP will continue to engage listeners in the weeks to come. As of now we are gearing up for our big summer of cricket broadcasts, with new members joining our expert commentary team including Ian Chappell, Tim Lane, Darren Lehmann and Glenn McGrath among others, to make Fairfax Radio Network a true cricket destination.

“There were pleasing results across our music stations with Magic 882 in Brisbane and Magic 1278 in Melbourne both recording solid gains, while Perth’s 96FM held its strong audience in keeping real music alive.”

Fairfax Radio Network’s ‘listener first’ strategy across its News, Talk, Music and Sport formats, along with new presenter line-ups at some News Talk stations and a refreshed format for the Magic music stations, is seeing audiences consolidate and engagement grow nationally.

Fairfax Radio Network Managing Director Adam Lang said: “Our ability to consistently deliver an informed, intelligent and influential brand of radio for our News, Talk, Music and Sport formats is our key point of difference and now showing real gains across our network. We continue our commitment to become the nation’s number one information and entertainment radio network.”

Fairfax Radio Network National Sales Director Nick Randall said: “Our digital growth has been phenomenal, particularly on mobile, with our new apps across our News Talk and Magic stations. Our audience now has a broader experience across radio, our DAB station Fairfax NTS and digital. People want to be where breaking news is and we see an immediate spike in our audiences and dwell time continues to grow.  In addition, our informed, intelligent and influential audience delivery and the ability to offer a fully integrated solution and content creation across Fairfax Media’s suite of assets, has seen advertiser demand rise significantly.

“Our AFL and NRL football coverage and strong audience growth has worked magnificently for our advertising partners. Cricket is now a big focus with our all star commentary line-up. We already have the naming rights and other key properties sold which gives us a lot of momentum heading into 2015.”
