Indigenous artist and activist Nakkiah Liu stuns on the cover of Australian Harper’s Bazaar relaunch issue, a move that, hopefully, makes for a more interesting era.
In the past, Harper’s Bazaar have opted for more traditional cover stars, like Naomi Watts, Lara Worthington or Nicole Kidman. Beautiful women that represent a commercial-friendly ‘it girl.’
The rejuvenated magazine is clearly making a statement with Lui, she’s equally beautiful, but Lui’s body of work is mostly about rallying against the status quo, not pleasing the mainstream.
Lui is a controversial and celebrated creative, known for working over various mediums. She’s a playwriter, actor, podcaster, commentator, screenwriter and prominent voice in Australian pop culture.
She may be most well known for starring and writing in the ABC series Black Comedy, a hilarious and thought-provoking show. On the everyday front, she often shares her views on her incredibly popular Twitter account that boasts over 50k followers.

Still, although she might not have been the expected choice, Liu stuns on the glamorous and no expense spared cover. She is wearing a $10,5000 Schiaparelli cape and dripping in $90,000 worth of Cartier, and yet something about the image still screams defiance.

Little is known about the Harper’s Bazaar Australia relaunch, although The Sydney Morning Herald, has reported that despite announcing the former editor Eugenie Kelly as editor, she will no longer be returning. Lui’s appearance on the cover certainly signals that this might be the beginning of an exciting rebirth.
