We get some really weird shit sent to us at B&T and today was absolutely no different. Today, one press release promised us more fun corgi facts than we ever thought possible – from 12 things you didn’t know about the Queen and her corgis, to the coolest corgi owners this world has ever seen.
And while it’s not entirely relevant to the industry, how could we not show you what has been dubbed as the latest “rock stars” of social media?!
The Internet’s growing fixation with corgi dogs has hit new heights in the run-up to the official 90th birthday this Saturday of the breed’s most famous owner.
Google searches for the word “corgis” have soared to record levels, as the celebrations of the Queen’s 90th prepare to reach their climax on her official birthday, this Saturday, June 11.
But the Queen aside, the other big driver has been the huge popularity of a handful of super-cute corgis on the photo-sharing website, Instagram, including of one corgi mega-star called Loki, with over 645,000 followers.
Whereas in the UK, corgis have an image as an old person’s dog, the U.S. cities that Googles them most are Portland and Austin, both known for their young, hipster vibe.
Pets in general are huge on Instagram – where even a hedgehog called Lionel has over 80,000 followers – but perhaps none more so than corgis, which are famed for their legendary cuteness, charisma and photogeneity.
“Corgis could almost have been designed for Instagram”, said Allison Sloan Polish, president of Spoonflower.
“They are the perfect shape to photograph. The Internet was once obsessed with cats but corgis are the same sort of size, shape and adorability. They seem to trigger the same cuteness and nurturing reflex. Corgis, you might say, are the new cats.”
