It will always be synonymous with Clarkson, Hammond and May but, them being long gone, the BBC is still plodding away with its new team for a revamped Top Gear.
Joining new host Chris Evans – whose appointment was announced last June – will be German motor racing driver Sabin Schmitz (pictured above), motoring writer Chris Harris and former F1 star David Coulthard.
None are great household names or TV talent and the UK press has been quick to turn on the supposed averageness of the new trio.
Schmitz is virtually unknown beyond her native Germany, Harris is known only for a YouTube video he hosts on cars, while Coulthard has always had a bit of a frosty relationship with the media with one commentator saying he “lacked the charisma” to be on the show.
As a positive, none can deny the driving credentials of Schmitz and Coulthard which would shame the skills of Clarkson, Hammond or May and points to a far quicker, racier show when it returns to screens in mid-2016.
