The Block beats Downton

Nine’s The Block won 1.5 million viewers last night taking out first place ahead of Seven’s Downton Abbey, which sat third.

The period drama pulled 1.29 million and followed Nine News which won 1.33 million, according to OzTam's metro overnight rankings. 

Seven News, Nine’s 60 Minutes, Seven’s Sunday Night proceeded, each winning over a million, as did law enforcement programs including Seven’s The Force and Border Security which ranked seventh and eighth.

ABC1’s broadcast of David Attenborough’s nature documentary Galapagos and The Making of David Attenborough’s Galapagos both featured in the top ten, pulling a combined 1.73 million viewers.

Ten’s MasterChef the Professionals was the network’s highest rating show of the evening and pulled 721,000 in 14th place.

Sherlock Holmes crime drama Elementary – which aired at 8:30pm and was hailed as one of the shows set to put Ten back on the map this year at Ten’s upfronts – rated 15th with 712,000. It was followed by Modern Family on 630,000.

However both MasterChef and Elementary rated higher than Nine’s The Mentalist, which scored 599,000 viewers in 17th spot.

Seven won the largest share of audience with 31.1%, while Nine took 29.6%, Ten pulled 17.9%, the ABC won 16.7% and SBS took 4.7%
