The Women in Media Awards are back for 2018! To celebrate this wonderful fact, and to recognise some of the killer women in our industry, we’ve created a women in media series – and have profiled some pretty inspiring women so far.
Earlier this week, we profiled Sarah Connelly, who is the brain behind the Product of the Year Australia (POY) awards – and this week it’s on to Lisa Sheehan!
Sheehan founded Incite Consulting after 20 years as a human resources executive, and her company now provides HR strategy development and execution, operations direction, and team development to a ton of companies nationwide.
Pretty impressive, right?
Speaking to B&T about her success, Sheehan said the best advice she’s ever received came from her mum.
“The best advice came when I ate breakfast on my first day of high school.
“Mum said ‘don’t say anything about anyone that you won’t be happy to say to their face.’ It was a good rule to get through high school and as I now realise a great way to live life, both personally and professionally,” she said.
Coincidentally, Sheehan’s mum is also one of the most inspiring women she knows.
“Through many other stories of experiences as a working woman and mother, she instilled in me from an early age the equal value of men and women,” she said.
Sheehan said that all industries, including those in the HR and media sector, are “evolving at a pace never seen before”
“Women are the key drivers of this as the worlds largest consumers.
“The power of the femeconomy makes it crucial for women to be present in the decision making of products and services, from design to delivery,” she said.
Having said this, Sheehan’s advice to young, aspiring women is to support other females around them, and seek out extra experience wherever possible.
“Put your hand up to be involved in projects beyond your day job, the experience and what you will learn will from others in the team will far out way the extra hours,” she said.
And Sheehan added that all companies can play a role in the promotion and support of women.
“Have measurements in place for your board, executives and people leaders to ensure you build momentum and have a clear understanding of what gender equality looks like.
“Then when you reach that, don’t stop! Don’t become complacent, lead your company and workforce into another facet of social issues that need to be addressed.
“Not only will you affect change in society but you will attract and retain talented people in your business, who are passionate and that makes a work a great place to be,” she said.
