Tropfest Makes A Return To SBS

Spectators at Open-Air Cinema event at Reisinger park in the city center of Wiesbaden, Germany - waiting for the beginning of the film.

Short film festival Tropfest will return to SBS 2 on Sunday December 7.

Tropfest aficionado Adam Spencer and The Feed and Movie Mayhem’s Marc Fennell return to host Tropfest 2014, and this year are joined by SBS 2’s leading lady and Feed reporter Jeannette Francis.

‘Mirror’ is the (TSI) Tropfest Signature Item this year and SBS 2 will be reflecting all the action from the live event straight into living rooms across Australia, showcasing the 16 finalist films, as well as exclusive interviews with the celebrity and industry judges and filmmakers before revealing the winner of Tropfest Australia 2014.

There will be a live social TV experience during the broadcast for viewers to join in using the hashtag #tropfestsbs2. SBS Online will be live streaming the broadcast making Tropfest available everywhere in the world.

Since its humble beginnings 22 years ago where John Polson created the event at a café in Darlinghurst, Tropfest has evolved to become a feature on the national event calendar. Every year it attracts huge crowds in Sydney as well as hosting several live screenings at locations across Australia including Melbourne, Canberra, Perth, Brisbane, Hobart, Adelaide and Surfers Paradise. Over 600 budding filmmakers have entered their short films for Tropfest 2014 and the 16 finalists will be announced next week.

Many of Australia’s greatest actors and directors have got their start by making or starring in a short for Tropfest. Notable alumni include international film star Sam Worthington, who won Best Actor in a 2001 short, as well as the Edgerton brothers Joel and Nash (Felony) and Clayton Jacobson (Kenny, Animal Kingdom).

The 23rd Tropfest Australia will be no exception, and together with SBS 2 it will propel the next crop of talented filmmakers to great heights, whilst simultaneously bringing quality, provocative and distinctive short films to audiences.
