ABC’s Tonightly Farewells Turnbull: “Our Most Successful Loser”

The ABC’s Tonightly has farewelled outgoing prime minister Malcolm Turnbull in a video memorial satirically thanking him for his service to Australia.

Overlaid with a sombre piano melody, Tonightly host Tom Ballard addressed Turnbull’s losing streak, calling him “one of Australia’s finest losers”.

He continues: “Even before being elected to parliament, Turnbull established himself as a consistent loser.

“Losing attempts at liberal pre-selection in 1981, 1982 and 1983, before going on to lose his virginity.”

“In the 1999 referendum, Turnbull led the Australian Republican Movement to an astounding loss.”

He adds, “But it was as prime minister Malcolm Turnbull showed what an impressive loser he was born to be.”

“He fought to stop the establishment of a banking Royal Commission, and successfully lost.

“He lost the internet, his corporate tax cuts, the National Energy Guarantee and his deputy prime minister.

“It’s been an extraordinary career of failure.”
