Storyblok Report: 86% of Aussie Companies See Productivity Gains With ‘Headless’ CMS

Digital content marketing, social media marketing, SEO, and market share. Concepts of digital marketing and advertising.

Storyblok, the content management system (CMS) category leader that empowers both developers and marketing teams to create better content experiences across all digital channels, recently released The State of CMS 2023 report for Australia to show how local companies use their content management systems.

Since content is vital for every business, the way in which it is managed determines whether businesses are successful in meeting customer expectations for modern digital experiences.

While ‘monolithic’ (traditional) content management systems continue to be in the majority for now, companies making the switch to new ‘headless’ CMS platforms are seeing substantial benefits of future-proofing their content operations. For context, a headless CMS allows you to manage content in one place, while still being able to leverage that content across any digital channel.

Surveying 160 respondents across Australia, the report found an overwhelming majority (86 per cent) of local businesses report improved KPIs, revenue growth, and productivity since using a headless CMS.

The report also found:

  • In the vast majority of businesses (76 per cent), multiple teams use a CMS on a regular basis, making proper workflows and collaboration capabilities even more important.
  • 27 per cent of businesses already use a headless CMS to manage their content from one central hub and publish simultaneously on any channel.
  • Majority of users (53 per cent) need more than 1 CMS just to maintain their content operations, with 11 per cent using 4 or more CMSs.

Why are businesses making the switch?

It’s unlikely that users switching to a new platform have only a single pain point to cause such a change, the report stated. The most common pain point was that the old platform was time-consuming (38 per cent). Better time management impacts every part of the content pipeline and improving it can be an essential way to optimise an organisation’s performance.

The second most common pain point was security issues (22 per cent). Security threats to a CMS can lead to serious consequences for the organisation: lost revenue, stolen data, and a huge blow to customer trust. This is one reason why many users choose a headless CMS. The use of APIs means that each program is naturally quarantined, so a security risk in one area cannot spread to another. Threats are contained immediately. This is opposed to a monolithic system, where one security breach has the potential to take down an entire system.

The third most frequently cited pain point was difficulty in needing to learn a new system, skill, or tech stack (15 per cent). This is another aspect that can negatively impact a company’s productivity and effectiveness – an inability to change old programs and add new ones can mean falling behind as customer expectations and technology evolve, the report explained.

“It’s so encouraging to see how many Australian businesses are experiencing the financial and productivity benefits that come from using a headless CMS,” said Dominik Angerer, co-founder and CEO of Storyblok.

“A recent Total Economic Impact™ study conducted by Forrester Consulting revealed that Storyblok provided a 582 per cent ROI over a three-year period and paid for itself in less than six months.

“Results like these are what will continue to motivate businesses to move on from the limitations of monolithic CMSs and modernise their content operations,” Angerer concluded.
